Hence libraries increase capabilities for innovative development, for creativity, and for making optimum use of information resources. So an efficient library and information system is of prime importance for any institution desire to achieve and maintain a real exuberance. Such a system which is an institute's capacity to manage, analyze and use its information places it in a position where, it can identify alternative courses of action and work out solutions for its problems.

Library and information services have become essential infrastructural facilities for supporting any discipline of knowledge that involves teaching, research, and development activities and the practical application of the acquired knowledge. Research generates new information; teaching, either formal or informal, disseminates already generated information in the classrooms; development inputs knowledge to create information for further development and practice applies the acquired new information and knowledge for the welfare of the people in the society. Library is a social institutions and its development in all wings of social life resulted in the creating knowledge based society.

Now a days, information is generated to vigorously in every moment in everywhere in the universe that creates problems and confusions among the information scientists. Book evaluation and selection is very essential to minimize problems and eliminate confusions in one hand. On the other hand, all information is not required and also not possible to acquire for a single library. For fulfilling the necessity and need of a particular library it is immensely required to appoint an efficient and skilled person to .select appropriate reading materials. Selection of reading rnaterials is significantly important to develop a good collection in a library.

Librarianship has a strong practical component and, in addition to learning about the theory that underpins the design, implementation and evaluation of library services, one will develop a variety of professionally relevant skills. Staff is highly active in research and consultancy, and one will find this reflected in the lecture materials as well as generating ideas for some ones own research project. The department has an international outlook and students have an opportunity to study in any other country as part of their learning experience.

Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLM1S) of Royal University of Dhaka is a 20-months (5-semesters program) provides an opportunity for individuals to prepare for managerial position s in today’s complex and dynamic environment. The program places strong emphasis on implication of information theory to the realities of the librarianship. It also recognizes    the demands of increasingly competitive, multicultural economy characterized by rapid technological innovation and superior product and service quality demands. The MSMLIS program consists of a prescribed pattern of graduate courses. The entire program is based on common core of courses, which examines the functions of the executive and the environment of the administrator. Beyond this core, the student may choose to study in some depth of particular fields in library and information, commutation and technology.

Information and its effective communication is a fundamental and vital activity with all areas of education, industry, and commerce, social and cultural life. The objectives of Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) of Royal University of Dhaka are to:

  • Provide an educational preparation for a career in librarianship and information work.
  • It concentrates on the role of libraries and information services in the provision of information directly relevant to the needs of their users and, additionally, considers the social and technological context in which they operate resulting in a strong vocational
  • Develop management skills for libraries and information systems of academic, research, public, government, health care and nonprofit organizations.
  • Develop ethical standards to provide a framework for responsible decision-making.
  • Develop problem-solving skills through the use of analytical techniques, case studies, research and internships.
  • Develop computer skills to utilize online, digital resources and information networks in making information management systems more effective.

To help the student achieve these objectives, the university relies on faculty members who are dedicated to teaching. The faulty combine broad professional and technological experience and academic training, which help to make the learning experience at Royal University of Dhaka unique.

Structure of the Program

Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) is a 56 credits, 20-months (5-semesters) program. These credits include 8 Prerequisite Courses (23 credits), 6 required Courses (18 credits), and a Thesis/Research Report (9 credits) under faculty supervision and Internship (6 credits) in any reputed organization.

  1. Admission Requirements

The admission requirement for the Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) program is a Bachelor's degree or a Bachelor's degree with honors in any subject or a Post-graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science or Information Science and Library Management from any recognized institute or university. The applicant's undergraduate grade point average (GPA) score and work experience will be considered in the admission process. A personal interview will be encouraged and may be required.

Upon acceptance for admission, students will receive a copy of their planned academic program. Students are encouraged to meet periodically with the head of program to discuss academic progress, career placement and special needs.

  1. Degree Requirements

A total of 56-credit hours of graduate course work are required for the MSLMIS degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4 points scale.
