Professor Dr. Gias U Ahsan is a distinguished academic leader and researcher with over three decades of experience in the field of health and education. His impressive journey has left an indelible mark on institutions such as the North South University (NSU), the Health Sector (DGHS), and the World Health Organization (SEARO/WHO).

As the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences (SHLS), and Founder Executive Director of the NSU Global Health & Genome Research Institutes, Dr. Ahsan has made significant contributions to enhancing the quality of education, promoting research, and fostering a culture of publication at NSU. Under his guidance, NSU has gained a stellar reputation, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Ahsan's leadership has been instrumental in facilitating worldwide academic collaborations and joint research partnerships with prestigious institutions like Johns Hopkins University, Cambridge, the University of Maryland, the University of Manitoba, and renowned universities across Asia. He has successfully attracted multi-million-dollar grants for high-impact joint research programs, forging partnerships with institutions such as the University of Manitoba in Canada, DFID, IDRC, and the UK Global Challenge Fund.

Notably, Dr. Ahsan has been awarded prestigious dengue research grants from the Canadian IDRC, where he served as the Bangladeshi Project Lead in collaborative research with the University of Manitoba, achieving remarkable outcomes.

His commitment to international collaborations is reflected in his role as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO), South East Asia Regional Office, for over three years. Additionally, he has served as an Executive Board Member of the South East Asia Public Health Education Institutes Network (SEAPHEIN) since 2003.

Dr. Ahsan's lasting contributions include co-founding the Department of Public Health and NSU Global Health and Genome Research Institutes at NSU, establishing them as centers of excellence and pioneering programs in Bangladesh. During his tenure as Dean, he ushered in significant improvements in academics and research.

Dr. Ahsan is a sought-after speaker, having delivered keynote lectures at numerous prestigious international and national conferences. His groundbreaking research has been supported by multi-million-dollar grants from international donors, including the Canadian IDRC, WHO TDR, the Global Challenge Fund from the University of Nottingham (UK), UNDP, and others. His research findings have been published in high-impact, prestigious journals, including The Lancet and PLOS ONE.

 

Recognizing his outstanding contributions in research, academics, and leadership, Mahidol University awarded Dr. Ahsan the Outstanding Alumnus awards in 2015 and 2018. Today, he continues his journey of academic excellence and leadership as the Vice-Chancellor of Royal University, Bangladesh.
