So an efficient library and information system is of prime importance for any institution desire to achieve and maintain a real exuberance. Such a system which is an institute's capacity to manage, analyze and use its information places it in a position where, it can identify alternative courses of action and work out solutions for its problems.

Library and information services have become essential infrastructural facilities for supporting any discipline of knowledge that involves teaching, research, and development activities and the practical application of the acquired knowledge. Research generates new information; teaching, either formal or informal, disseminates already generated information in the classrooms; development inputs knowledge to create information for further development and practice applies the acquired new information and knowledge for the welfare of the people in the society. Objectives

The objectives of Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) of Royal University of Dhaka are to:

  • Provide an educational preparation for a career in librarianship and information work.
  • It concentrates on the role of libraries and information services in the provision of information directly relevant to the needs of their users and, additionally, considers the social and technological context in which they operate resulting in a strong vocational

Structure of the
Program

Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) is a 56 credits, 20-months (5-semesters) program. These credits include 8 Prerequisite Courses (23 credits), 6 required Courses (18 credits), and a Thesis/Research Report (9 credits) under faculty supervision and Internship (6 credits) in any reputed organization.

The breadth of faculty evident from the many courses offered on varied topics: Information Resources Development, Cataloguing, Classification, Documentation and Information Retrieval, International and Comparative Librarianship, Indexing and Abstracting, Information Networking, and Resource Sharing, Hardware Maintenance and Troubleshooting, Information and Communication Technology, Automation of Information Institutions, and Research Methodology.

Admission
Requirements

The admission requirement for the Master of Science in Library Management and Information Science (MSLMIS) program is a Bachelor's degree or a Bachelor's degree with honors in any subject or a Post-graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science or Information Science and Library Management from any recognized institute or university. The applicant's undergraduate grade point average (GPA) score and work experience will be considered in the admission process. A personal interview will be encouraged and may be required.

Upon acceptance for admission, students will receive a copy of their planned academic program. Students are encouraged to meet periodically with the head of program to discuss academic progress, career placement and special needs.

Requirements

A total of 56-credit hours of graduate course work are required for the MSLMIS degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4 points scale.

English is the major language of communication in the scientific and technological world. The medium of instruction at RUD is English. Students are required to have proficiency in both spoken and written English, although the students will be taught two courses on English in two consecutive semesters to make them skilled in technical & communicative English.
The performance of a student in a given course is made through Continuous Evaluation that comprises of Class Test, Class Attendance, Homework / Assignment and a Semester Final Examination. Letter Grades and Grade Points are used to evaluate the performance of a student in a given course. The grading system at RUD is as per with national and international standards, which is also in sharp compliance of the University Grants Commission’s guidelines. A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C & D are the passing grades while F is the failing grade. The numerical equivalence of the grades as used in calculating the CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is as follows:
