The Royal University of Dhaka organized a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Sheikh Russell Day. Discussions and prayers were held at 11 am at the Dhaka Permanent Campus in Tejgaon, the capital.

Dr. Jamil Ahmed, the Registrar of the Royal University of Dhaka, presided over the meeting, and the chief guest, Prof. Dr. GU Ahsan, delivered a speech.

During his speech, Prof. Dr. Ahsan expressed that Sheikh Russell would remain a symbol of rights and underprivileged children worldwide. The assassins who took Shaheed Russell’s life aimed to eliminate the heirs of Bangabandhu’s blood, but they did not succeed.

Dr. Jamil Ahmed, in his speech, emphasized the importance of ensuring that no child becomes a victim of brutality like Russell. He called for all the children of the world to be given the opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving environment. This, he said, should be our hope on Sheikh Russell Day.

Other speakers at the meeting, including Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Mohammad Shahidur Rahman, Controller of Examinations Dr. Rafiq Ullah, Proctor Malay Sarkar, Chairman of the English Department Johrat Ara, and Course Coordinator Malobika Majumder, as well as Lecturer Obaidur Rahman, delivered speeches.

The meeting began with the National Anthem and a minute of silence observed in honor of martyr Sheikh Russell’s soul. Shaheed Sheikh Russell’s biography was discussed, and poems were recited by Tasmeena Crorie, English Department Lecturer Yuki Barua, and Prof. Dr. Dipu Siddiqui, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Arts.

Sheikh Russell was born on October 18, 1964, on Dhanmondi Road No. 32. He tragically lost his life on August 15, 1975, due to the heartless bullets of the assassins.

At the conclusion of the discussion meeting, special prayers were offered for the souls of all martyrs, including the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Sheikh Russell.
